Biology: There are 16 species of bats in Great Britain, all of
which are protected, as are their roosts.
During the summer, the females collect at a "maternity roost" to give birth to their young. Female bats give
birth to one infant a year, which is suckled on milk until it can feed itself. Using a system of echo-location,
these small mammals consume large numbers of insects whilst flying.
Late summer, early autumn, the bats search for winter sites to roost, hibernating in small groups, or alone.
They can often be seen in caves, tunnels, or abandoned buildings.
Bats live for many years, some species live for more than 30 years.
Bats Are Protected By Law.
All 16 species of bat are protected by the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981, schedule 5. Reinforced by the
Conservation Regulations 1994, removing the word "intentional" from the clause relating to damage to places
used by bats.
It is illegal to Kill, injure, capture or disturb bats, to obstruct access to a bat roost, damage or destroy a bat
roost.
Size: British bats range from 5g to 30g, although, because of their
wing spans, they appear much bigger.
Markings: Grey/brown/black short fur on body.
Proportionally large membrane wings.
Location: Often seen flying on summer nights, bats are usually
noticed inside buildings when females wean their young.
Detection: Sighting of droppings in roof voids. Often mistaken
for mouse dropping, they measure 4-8mm and crumble easily.
