Biology: Mating occurs in their harbourage, after which the
female spends the next month or more laying eggs in batches, at a rate of approximately 6 a day. For the
eggs to hatch the temperature must be at least 11°C. The emerging young are small nymphal forms of the
adult. The nymph moults 5 - 6 times, increase in size each time until it is an adult. The process from egg
to adult can take as long as 18 months, depending upon temperature and food supply.
Bed bugs are blood feeders, however, they are not host specific. Able to go several months without feeding,
they can consume over 7 times their body weight in a single sitting, lasting as little as 10 minutes.
Apart from the obvious social stigma, bed bugs disturb sleep and their bites can result in irritation and sores,
leaving the victim vulnerable to further infection.
Size: 4 - 7mm.
Markings: Dark mahogany after feeding, otherwise cream in colour. Wingless.
Location: In bed frames, furniture, behind headboards, under loose wall paper etc.
Detection: Bites on the body, blood spotting on bed sheets, actual sightings.
