Biology: The female will lay upto 160 eggs amongst natural fibres,
over a period of 2 - 3 weeks. The eggs hatch after 4 - 10 days to reveal a small white translucent larva.
The larva constructs a silk feeding tunnel often resembling the fabric on which it is feeding. The larva can
grow upto 10mm, the head darkening in colour, and moulting their feeding tunnels at least 5 times before it pupates.
The larva constructs a tough cocoon in which they moult to produce a pupa approximately 7mm in length, often found
hanging off ceilings and walls.
The full cycle can take a little as 88 days in a domestic environment, or as long as 254days, depending upon
temperatures and conditions.
Size: Adult 10 - 12mm in length, 10 - 15mm wingspan. Larva upto 10mm in length.
Markings: Pale buff, pearl in appearance, unmarked.
Location: Under heavy furniture, in carpets, fur coats, stuffed animals,
bird's nest in roof voids.
Detection: The larvae attacks animal products e.g. wool, fur,
leather, silk. Biting through the fibres, they destroy much more than they consume. Signs of an infestation
are damages carpets under heavy furniture, feeding tunnels found around the skirting boards, clothes moths
found behind furniture and pictures.
