Biology: German - More active than the oriental cockroach,
it can often be seen during the day. The average life span of the adult is between 4 - 5 months. The female
carries the egg case until the eggs are ready to hatch, producing between 30 - 40 nymphs. The nymphs develop
through 6 stages taking 6 - 7 weeks at 30 C. A female will produce an ootheca, egg case, every 3 - 4 weeks.
Oriental - Principally nocturnal, sightings during the day indicate a heavy infestation. The life span of
the adult will vary from 2 months to 9 months depending upon climate (cooler = longer). The female deposits the 10mm,
dark brown ootheca (egg case) shortly after it is formed, producing one every 10 days, each ootheca contain
approximately 16 eggs. The nymph develop through 7 - 10 stages taking 6 - 12 months depending upon temperature.
The oriental is the most common in Britain. Due to the feeding habits of cockroach, they are considered a major
health risk, known vectors of many diseases. These carriers of pathogenic bacteria are associated with nearly
every form of food poisoning.
Size: German 10 - 15mm, Oriental 20 - 24mm, American 28 - 44mm.
Markings: German - beige/gold in colour with two dark
marks/lines down the pronotum, behind the head. Wing are as long as the body in males, shorter in females.
Oriental - dark mahogany, almost black in colour. Males have wings covering 2/3 of its abdomen.
American - reddish brown with yellow border around the pronotum.
Location: Mainly found near food and water. German cockroach prefers
warm, humid conditions e.g. centrally heated buildings, kitchens etc. Oriental cockroach prefers cooler, less
humid environment e.g. basements and drains. American cockroach is a subtropical species and normally only
found in shipping ports.
Detection: Sightings of faecal matter, adults & nymphs and egg casings.
