Biology: Squirrels have two litters a year,
with a gestation period of 45 days. The first litter is born in February/March and the second
on June/July each consisting of a maximum of 6 young, although normally 3 or 4. The young squirrels
are weaned after 10 weeks.
Squirrel nest in dreys, consisting of twigs and leaves; however, urban populations often infest roof
voids, where they use loft insulation and fabric from stored goods.
A squirrel's diet is varied, consisting of nuts, fruit, new shoots, buds even bird eggs and nestlings.
Their teeth grow continuously and they gnaw to control the length. With a bite of 7000 psi, gnawing
at 6 bites per second, they can chew through almost anything.
