Biology: Mites are not classed as insects, but classed as spiders
and ticks. Often invisible to the naked eye, there is a mite to suit every ecological climate.
The adult mite may typically lay upto 500 eggs, depending upon variety. The hatch out as six legged larvae,
going through several nymphal stages before becoming a adult. Egg to adult can take less than 3 weeks,
depending upon temperature. In periods of drought and starvation some mites can go through the "hypopus""
stage. This enables them to resist extreme environmental conditions.
Mites do pose a risk to human health, considered to be the causative agent of asthmatic attacks. They can cause
great damage to food stores and bird mites even bite humans.
